Embarking on a wine-tasting journey in Napa Valley might seem like an unlikely choice for parents with a 6-month-old, but our recent trip proved that it’s not only possible but also incredibly enjoyable. From charming vineyards to delicious dining experiences, here’s a recap of our unforgettable family-friendly escape to Napa, along with some tips for those considering a similar adventure with their little one.
Day 1: JVB Cellars and Imaginary Winery
Our journey began with a picturesque visit to JVB Cellars, where we indulged in not only a glass of delicious wine but also a charcuterie board (my fav) and some wood-fired pizza (Lars’ fav) under the warm sunshine. The family-friendly ambiance made it an ideal starting point for our Napa adventure after touching down from the flight.
Next up was Imaginary Winery, a charming spot with its inviting atmosphere and great wines. Imaginary Winery has a grassy area for your little ones to run around (if they are of that age), or you can bring a blanket and lay it out for your little one to enjoy some tummy time in the fresh air. If you can go to Napa this time of year, I highly recommend it because the colors everywhere are BEAUTIFUL!
Day 2: Seavey Vineyards, Farmstead, Alpha Omega, and Bear at Stanley Ranch
Our second day was our big adventure day. We picked two wineries, and two restaurants we really wanted to try and tried to plan everything around Ruby’s schedule as much as we could, while also still keeping expectations low. We rented a car so that we could leave at any point if Ruby was done, which brought me peace of mind.
At 10 am, we scheduled a wine tasting at Seavey Vineyards, where the warm hospitality and exceptional wines made it our absolute favorite stop. It was a cozy, family-run gem celebrated for its top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon. We were greeted by the founder’s son, Will Seavey himself, and our tasting journey kicked off with a sip of their delightful Chardonnay.
Will took us into this utterly charming stone building straight out of a fairytale that used to be a working milk barn from the 1800s! We got a tour of where they make all their wines and learned that they have never bought a single grape and produce all their wine entirely on-site. Then we sat down for our tasting and let me tell you, Seavey’s Cabernets are on a whole new level! The Caravina Cabernet? Incredible.
After the tasting, Will took Lars on a tour of the vineyards on a Polaris Razor while Ruby and I walked around to check out the property and see their sheep!
If you are planning a trip to Napa, Seavey Vineyards is definitely worth including in your itinerary!
Lunch at Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch provided a farm-to-table experience which was to die for. I got lots of recommendations for this place so I was excited to try it out. Everything is fresh from their farm and ranch and you can tell… it was delicious! A must-visit haven for food enthusiasts and those seeking a taste of Napa Valley’s finest.
In the afternoon, we ventured to Alpha Omega, where the scenic vineyard views added an extra layer of magic to our wine-tasting experience. They had a lovely shaded grass area where we laid out a blanket and relaxed as a family and it was probably my favorite part of the whole trip. I knew we were going to be doing a lot that day, so I was hoping it wouldn’t feel rushed or like we were just running from one thing to the other – so taking the time to relax in such a beautiful setting was just perfect.
The day concluded with a family-friendly dinner at Bear at Stanly Ranch, where the cozy ambiance and delicious fare ended the most perfect day on the best note. We arrived just as the sun was setting and walked around the gorgeous property where you can see garden beds filled with fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs. The restaurant was so vibey and the menu was incredible. Pro Tip: Get the bread and butter. It was incredible.
Day 3: MacArthur Place and Layla
Our final day in Napa kicked off with a leisurely breakfast at MacArthur Place’s restaurant, Layla. The charming surroundings and delicious food made it the perfect start to our day, setting a relaxed tone for our departure. It started raining that day so it was the perfect opportunity to cozy up after an eventful previous day and just relax at the hotel until we headed home.
Tips for Traveling to Napa with a Baby
1. Plan Your Itinerary with Flexibility
While wine tasting is a priority, be sure to include family-friendly activities and downtime to accommodate your baby’s schedule.
2. Choose Accommodations Wisely
Opt for family-friendly hotels with amenities like cribs and spacious rooms. Call in advance to see what they may have so that it can be one less thing you have to pack and worry about!
3. Pack Essentials
Bring all the baby essentials for a day on the go like a baby carrier for vineyard strolls. Lots of winery tours go to their outdoor spaces with unpaved ground so sometimes a stroller isn’t the best option. We found that a carrier was a more comfortable experience.
4. Time Your Visits
Schedule wine tastings during your baby’s nap times or when they are most content. This ensures a more enjoyable experience for everyone.
5. Embrace Family-Friendly Vineyards
Look for wineries with welcoming atmospheres and outdoor spaces. Many Napa Valley wineries are family-friendly, providing a relaxed environment for both adults and little ones.
Our trip to Napa Valley with our 6-month-old was a delightful blend of wine-tasting, delicious dining, and family-friendly experiences. With careful planning and a flexible mindset, parents can savor the best of Napa’s offerings while creating beautiful memories with their little ones. Cheers to the perfect family getaway in the heart of wine country!
